While re-creating on paper the collection of table stones of the Lofty Hermit of Tiger Gorge, I realized a useful property of memory. Embarking on the project, I never expected to be able to recall every stone and the Jun ware planter we matched it to, and yet, once I began, I found that by focusing on just one stone, I could see it in my mind's eye as clearly as if I was standing in front of it more than half a millennium ago. I even recall the pale cinnabar spots we splashed incidentally onto some of them one drunken night, never bothering to wash [them] off.
