He first studied under lshikawa kinichiro before head-ing to japan and entering the Kawabata Painting In-stitute and Hongoo Art Institute. During his stay in japan, Chang was inspired by Fauvism which he grad-ually incorporated into his style. Chang returned to Taiwan in 1938 and taught at seveeral schools. he first withdrew from the Taiyang Association and then co-founded the MOUVE Association with Chen Teh-won and Hong ray-lin in 1938,which was later renamed the Taiwan Art Association. In 1954 he co-founded the Century Association. in the 1970s, Chang trav-eled to Europe where he had a solo exhibitionat the National Museum of Art in Taichung in 1977. In 1997 he held a solo exhibition at the Taipei Fine Arts Mu-Seum in celebration of his 88th birthday. chang passed away in Taipei in 2003 at the age of 95. Con-sidered as one of the most important Taiwanese artists of the early 20th century, Chang devoted his life to the art of painting .and was an influential fig-ure in promoting the aesthetic concepts behind Fau-vism in Taiwan.
